Cat Breeds

March 9th, 2010 by alanwashington1990

To the casual observer, the cat world consists largely of domestic short hairs and tabby cats. In truth, however, the cat world is populated with dozens of breeds with varying colors and hair length. Some of these breeds are fairly normal looking; others, not so much. Here are seven of the more unusual cat breeds:

1. Maine Coon

Maine Coons are big, beautiful cats - and they know it! Native to North America, this long-haired cat is the state cat of Maine. It is one of the largest domestic cat breeds, with some males weighing over 20 pounds. A popular myth is that the Maine Coon was the result of a cross-breeding between a raccoon and a feral domestic cat, which resulted in the breed sometimes being called a “coon cat.” Geneticists, however, will tell you that this is not possible.

The Maine Coon has a long soft coat with a silky feel, and a mane that gives the cat a regal appearance. These cats are affectionate in nature and make great pets. An unusual characteristic is that they are less averse to water than many other cats, which makes them easier to bathe!

2. Scottish Fold

This cat is best known for its unusual ears, which fold forward, hence the name. The breed originated in 1961 in Scotland, where William Ross found a litter of kittens with folded ears. He and his wife then began breeding the Scottish Fold. A genetic mutation causes the unusual-looking ears. While these ears give this cute breed a distinctive appearance, the genetic mutation that causes the fold sometimes carries abnormalities. Scottish Folds are susceptible to arthritis-like joint problems. Breeders, however, have made strides toward reducing this problem.

Scottish Folds are sweet-natured cats who make wonderful companions. However, they also are rare, with demand far outstripping the supply.

3. The Bengal

A rare, but popular breed, some controversy surrounds this cat because of its origins. The Bengal is the product of a cross-breeding between a domestic cat and the wild Asian Leopard Cat. As a result, Bengals have an exotic appearance and are sometimes referred to as “pet leopards.” They have sleek, muscular bodies and short coats that often have spotted and marbled patterns.

The Bengal's leopard-like nature is not limited to its looks. Bengals are intelligent, active cats that love to scale walls and roost in high places. Like the Maine Coon discussed earlier, Bengals have a fondness for water, probably because of their wild cat roots. These cats have been known to play in bathtubs and water dishes.

4. Korat

A distinctive breed known for its bluish-silver coat and bright green eyes, the Korat is originally from Thailand, where having one is considered very good luck. Korats have gentle natures, as well as powerful senses of smell, sight, and hearing. Their hearing ability makes them anxious around sudden loud or harsh noises. The Korat also is gentle and affectionate.

These cats are said to be less likely to trigger allergic reactions in people because they shed less hair than many other cat breeds. Their distinctive green eyes develop over time. Korat kittens have blue eyes, which later become amber, then the vibrant green for which the breed is known.

5. The Ocicat

The Ocicat resulted from the breeding of Siamese with American Shorthairs and looks like wild spotted cats, such as ocelots and leopards. Ocicats come in various colors, but all of them have the distinctive spotted pattern.

First recognized as a breed in 1966, the Ocicat is active and athletic, and very devoted to its owner. These cats are very sociable and should not be left alone for long periods of time. Fortunately, Ocicats is more adaptable than other breeds of cat, and many of them can travel comfortably with their owners. They also can be taught to walk on leashes and to respond to voice commands.

6. The Cornish Rex

With its pointy face, piercing eyes, and bat-like ears, the Cornish Rex is often characterized as looking like a space alien. The Cornish Rex is an active, playful, and affectionate cat with a wavy coat that feels like velvet to the touch.

The Cornish Rex, as the name implies, originated in Cornwall, in the southwest of England. These cats have coats of short, wavy hair that shed less than other cats. This breed also is known for its small head and hollow cheeks. It also has large ears that seem out of proportion to the size of its head.

7. The Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau is an exotic-looking cat with a fascinating history. The Mau (the Egyptian word for cat) has frequently been depicted in the artwork of the ancient Egyptians. These cats were not only kept as pets, but worshipped as gods and held in enormous affection and respect. The Egyptian Mau is the only domestic cat breed that is naturally spotted. It also has green eyes and is moderately active.

Dogs

March 4th, 2010 by alanwashington1990

As weird and unusual as it may seem dogs are succeeding where psychiatrist have failed. Pets are actually invading mental hospitals, nursing homes, and institutions for handicapped and retarded children. A Dr. Calabro of the Feeling Heart Foundation explains how dogs are accomplishing this: The problem is that many of these residents that live in these institutions often do not interact with anyone, and are isolated. They have nothing to do and are unloved. The dogs help to break through these so called shells.

He also explains that dogs give unconditional love, security and warmth with no strings attached. Most psychiatric doctors just prescribe drugs and leave it at that. Animals do not exactly cure people but they help to open avenues of communication. Dogs also help to alleviate some of the patients anxiety's. They began to feel needed, and enjoy having the responsibility. Did you know that in a children's psychiatric hospital in Michigan a mixed breed dog roams a ward offering its companionship to any child that may be in need? Just think about how warm and affectionate a dog can be. It is very hard to resist.

It has also been proven that pets can help with physical ailments as well. The University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore found that heart patients with dogs had a much better chance of survival after they left the hospital than those without. As people grow older they often end up feeling abandoned, and useless. A dog can help to fill this void. Did you know that researchers have also found that having a dog helps to reduce blood pressure. Although having a pet is not for everyone there is a huge benefit for certain persons.

More and more hospitals are following this trend with some of their patients. Usually it is only used on those patients that are not helped by the standard or traditional treatment. This is in no way suggesting that it replaces the older methods. Sometimes pets help people open up a whole new world especially for those who may be dealing with a disability. There are many programs that provide pets for sick or elderly people. These people get so much joy from the time that they spend with their pet. A unique bond is actually formed between the two.

If you have a family member who is currently going to a psychiatrist and has been going for quite some time. Why not talk to their doctor about getting them a dog to help them. You will also want to make sure that you discuss this over with the individual as well. First you will want to find out how they feel about dogs. You can even give them kind of a trial run, maybe take them to one of the organizations that provides pets for people with special needs. They are usually very helpful about finding the right dog or companion for each individual. Like I stated earlier in this article dogs are not for everyone, but you will want to keep in mind that there are numerous breeds of dogs.

And they also each have very unique and different personalities which is why it is also very important to make sure that you do your research to make sure that you pick the breed that is best for the individual. Usually they will provide an experienced person for you to interact with at these animal organizations. To find out which organizations are in your area you can first ask the doctor or you can contact your local state or county office. They usually have a listing of these special organizations for public use.

Varicose Veins

December 23rd, 2009 by alanwashington1990

Varicose veins usually show up in adulthood, building after years of doing the wrong things. Prolonged sitting, which cuts of the blood flow to the arteries, makes a significant contribution to bulging veins in the legs. Crossing the legs will expedite the problem. To have a healthy blood flow, the legs have to move, pumping the blood back to the heart. A daily brisk walk is recommended for healthy maintenance, but once the varicose veins develop, it's time to zero in on the problem and take corrective measures.

One such measure can be found in supplements to open the arteries and increase blood flow. According to studies from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, animals who received insufficient amount of copper in their diets were susceptible to constricting blood vessels. Humans are encouraged to get enough of this trace mineral to strengthen the inside of the blood vessels. The recommended dose is two milligrams a day, and that may be taken with a supplement or consumed from nuts, red meat, seeds and shellfish.

Blood clots are also a risk when suffering from varicose veins. To minimize the risk, vitamin B, B12 and Folic Acid have been shown to strip the veins of deadly clots and strengthen the heart muscle against disease. In addition to a supplement program, varicose vein sufferers are encouraged to bump up their diet with fiber-rich foods.

In addition to a vitamin and exercise program, herbal supplements are another way to attack the problem. Butcher's Broom is used to increase circulation and improve blood clots, hemorrhoids, varicose veins and arteriosclosis. Another popular choice is Horse Chestnut, used to specifically target the circulation in the legs. Bilberry is used to relax the overall vascular system, with special attention to the retinal blood vessels, but is also recommended for varicose veins.

For advanced cases that have become painful and debilitating, new medical technology has arrived. In the old days, major surgery was required to tighten weak veins, but now there is hope with laser surgery. The EndoVenous Laser Treatment, EVLT, is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, leaves no scars, offers immediate relief, and is covered by most insurance plans. Patients can walk in and walk out on their own power, returning to normal life at once.

The laser is applied the entire length of the varicose vein, shrinking the vein walls, and causing them to tighten. A tiny fiber is painlessly inserted near the knee, which activates the laser and repairs the faulty vein. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and the patient is advised to follow up every five years for maintenance. In some cases, there may be minor bruising or a slight pain where the fiber was inserted, but simple over-the-counter pain relievers are sufficient. With today's technology, there is no good reason why anybody should suffer with unsightly and painful varicose veins. Laser surgery is freedom and liberty for all.

Asthma Medicine

December 18th, 2009 by alanwashington1990

Immediate Answers - 6 quick remedies come first for those in a panic rush! *

* If the patient is a child, take no chances - use the E.R. if the inhaler is not found!
* This article is not intended to diagnose or treat any disease or condition - you must discuss these options with your doctor(s) to verify compatibility with individual circumstances before using them, and all O.T.C. substances taken will affect unborn or nursing children.

Here is a short list of the topics covered:

  1. OTC remedies
  2. Caffeine
  3. Allergy medicine
  4. Steam
  5. Friends & family
  6. Asthma buddies

I am an asthmatic with extensive experience. I have had to use many different medications for my asthma, and the above-listed remedies are ones that I use in the event I can't use my normally-prescribed emergency inhaler. So I know that these methods are effective. Every asthmatic does, however, need to have a talk with their doctor about these options because individual circumstances may render some of these methods unusable. One example is nursing mothers - caffeine will enter breast milk and it will affect the baby!

Now, here are the details:

1. Fast-acting OTC asthma medicine from a retail store works well. Call & verify availability before you go!

  • Primatene Mist - inhaler is the best option! (~$18-20)
  • Primatene Mist - pills are second-best option! (~$10)

Primatene Mist is a great alternative to an emergency inhaler. The medication does carry risks with its use, and this medication is often a pain in the neck to get after normal retail pharmacy hours because it is now considered a controlled substance (it contains epinephrine) and is often under lock and key or behind the pharmacy counter. Sometimes you can get it straight off the shelf at a Publix or a CVS 24-hour pharmacy.

For those 3am emergency runs, don't even consider a Kroger or a Walgreens. They are behind a locked counter and I have yet to see any pharmacist available to sell me Primatene Mist at any location I've been to.

I highly recommend that you call to verify inventory availability before you head out the door, because it's always out of stock at the first few places I visit; now I just pick up the phone, save gas & time, and call ahead.

2. Caffeine can help resolve the issue. Here are some sources:

  • 2 cups of coffee
  • 2 cans of Coca Cola
  • a Mountain Dew, or d. 2 pills of No-Doze
  • 2 cans of Red Bull
  • 1 Starbucks Double Shot Energy + Coffee

Caffeine has been used for years in elementary schools - when I was a child, the school nurse would have me sit with her and down 2 cokes. It takes about about 5 minutes, and it's a cheap option.

Combine the caffeine with steam from a hot shower running, and the relaxing warmth of the steam can double the effect of the caffeine.

My experience with Mountain Dew first started when the cops I worked with ripped out the coffee pot and installed a vending machine with nothing but Mountain Dew!

(NOTE - if you see a Dr. Pepper bottle in a cop's hands, it may not actually be a Dr. Pepper… They sometimes chew tobacco and use the Dr. Pepper bottle to disguise the spit as the soda so passers-by don't get grossed out.)

As for my best choice: the Starbucks Double Shot energy + coffee drink works on your system in several ways. Not only do you get caffeine, you also get several additional, different, substances that work on your system in a similar manner to caffeine. In other words, you're using a cannon to swat the fly. This drink takes about 20 minutes to take effect, but it's worth it. Asthmatics, discuss this drink with your doctor and keep a stock of it if you can. You never know when you may need it.

3. Fast-Acting allergy medicine. Here are a few sources:

  • Benadryl
  • Sudafed (for allergies)
  • Claritin

Allergy meds: most people do not realize just how much asthma is caused by allergies, and this group sadly includes asthmatics who just puff away on the inhaler without really digging to see if allergies are the cause of their misery.

Benadryl fast-dissolving strips come in a flip-open plastic container that has individually-packed strips. These work rapidly, and Benadryl has been the gold standard for allergy medicines for a long time.

Antihistamine medications are best taken when symptoms are just starting up. Asthmatics need to “cover all their bases,” as the saying goes.

Fast Fact: The Atlanta, Georgia, region (USA) is known world-wide as one of the world's worst regions for allergies. If you need further proof of this, just take a look at the major shopping centers - there are a large number of allergy doctors in this region offering their services to asthmatics.

4. Steam - hot showers are a quick solution.

Steam in the air has a relaxing effect and it is one of the oldest remedies for asthma. My mother used this with me when I was a child, and it has worked well in conjunction with the above-listed remedies.

5. Call friends, family, or the after-hours nurse line.

The reason why it is advised to call buddies, family, or the after-hours nurse line is that you may need one of these people to take you to an ER if these remedies don't work, and just talking with someone can lessen the effect of an asthma attack. Talking with another person has a relaxing affect, and a record of your asthma attack can help your doctor decide with you if your current medication regimen needs to be adjusted.

Asthma is potentially fatal, and other people need to know if you are having trouble with your breathing. Also, it is possible that asthmatics may not be clear-headed enough to determine if they need to be treated by an ER.

Also - sometimes a joke or two will cure a stress-related asthma attack. I sometimes have asthma attacks as a result of severe stress. A hug or comforting conversation has helped in the past.

6. Buddy up with other asthmatics & call on them if you need quick help.

Asthmatics have a unique experience and the camaraderie that they share can be valuable. Unfortunately, people without asthma cannot really understand the terror that an asthma attack causes - asthma is like drowning, and a patient really suffers when no inhaler is available - so it's best to be with other asthmatics.

Technically, it is illegal to share medication, but the reality of the situation is that people will share their inhalers if the other person has the exact same prescription. Asthma is a life-threatening disease / condition and medication is often needed immediately to save the person's life and protect the patient's health.

As a safety measure, I have found that sharing my inhaler with those with the same prescription has nipped many an attack in the bud. I have, myself, needed a puff or two off a buddy's inhaler, and the relationship with fellow asthmatics helps us all focus on staying healthy. I only do this with my doctor's okay, and with others who have the exact type of medication that I use as well!

Peers often keep each other informed and can help each other stay on top of the game. Also, just having the knowledge that support is just a phone call away can stave off the panic and reduce symptoms just in time to allow for a lost inhaler to be effectively searched for & found.

I do not advocate breaking any laws. If it is illegal to share your inhaler, then you do so at your own risk. It is not recommended that patients share inhalers unless the practice is legal in your area. It is your responsibility to know the laws in your area with regard to the practice of anything listed in this article.

Also - patients do not need to be driving while suffering from asthma! Buddies can bring over their inhaler and help the patient effectively recover as necessary while helping to find a lost inhaler. If the patient needs to drive, a buddy can help with that as well, as it is extremely hard to concentrate on driving while trying to breathe. I myself ran a stop sign once while rushing out to buy a Primatene Mist inhaler. (Thankfully, no one else was driving on that road at that time.)

Legal stuff:
If the patient is a child, take no chances - use an inhaler or take the child to an ER. Children often hide severe conditions, and they are unable to have the same degree of control as an adult, so immediate medical care is needed if the inhaler cannot be found or the child's medication doesn't work. Discuss these options with your doctor, because not everyone can use these options. All substances taken will affect unborn or nursing children, so expecting or nursing mothers must get a doctor's approval before use.

In conclusion, I've got the following to report: It's tough being an asthmatic, especially when the inhaler goes MIA - so discuss these options with your doctor and be prepared. If your doctor authorizes any of the OTC substances, then be smart - keep a small stock in several places as part of your emergency first-aid kit. For pregnant and nursing women - be prepared for a very jittery baby if you use any of the OTC options, and use them only after getting doctor approval - individual circumstances can make it lethal to use any OTC substances.

Thanks for reading, and I encourage any comments! Let the world know if these tips are helpful.

Here are a few extra last-minute tips:

  • If you have to travel while suffering an asthma attack, have someone else drive! I have found that I drive very poorly while struggling to breathe. An accident is the dead last thing you want with an asthma attack.
  • For asthmatics who work - be smart, and keep a key to your house and/or car at work with buddies that you really trust, because this enables them to help you in an emergency. I once locked myself both out of my car and out of my house, and had to call a buddy with back-up keys to help me out.
  • Try to keep a copy of your inhaler at multiple locations “just in case.” Also, Develop a first aid kit to include a stock of OTC options for emergencies.

Air Cleaners

December 15th, 2009 by alanwashington1990

Air purifiers are used to clean the air in homes, offices, and other closed spaces. People who suffer from allergies tend to use air purifiers because of the health benefits they afford, especially for asthmatics. The general public is turning toward the use of air purifiers as well, simply because of the health benefits associated with breathing cleaner air.

People spend most of their day inside, which is why the quality of indoor air is so important. On top of this fact, rooms are tightly sealed and don't allow enough air to flow freely. Studies have shown that indoor air quality is actually much worse than the air outside!

There are several types of pollutants that contribute to poor indoor air quality. Air purifiers have been designed to target dust, mold, spores, pollen, pet dander, and cigarette smoke. If you want to improve your overall health and well-being, installing a modern air purifier is probably a good idea.

A decent air purifier is not difficult to find. In fact, a large number of companies manufacture air cleaners and have a wide variety of models available for purchase. Of course, if you buy a higher quality air cleaner, it will do a much better job of cleaning the air. Quality air cleaners keep harmful elements, such as dust and bacteria, out of the air and eradicate any allergens that may be affecting you.

At first the cost of an air purifier may discourage you from making the purchase, but many people decide to make the investment in an air purifier in order to benefit from the positive long-term effects of having one installed in their home. The list of air purifiers on the market is a long one, so you will have a lot of choice when it comes time to purchase an air cleaner.

Read through air purifier reviews before making a final decision, so you can get to know what types of air cleaners are out there. Air purifier reviews are an excellent source of information. Also, you may want to make a few considerations before deciding to buy an air cleaner. For instance, what is the purpose of purchasing an air cleaner? Are you looking for air cleaners that will help you with allergy symptoms? How many rooms will need the use of the air cleaner?

Always take into account the needs of your household when deciding what air cleaners to consider. For example, an ionic breeze home air filter uses ions to purify the air, which is a great way to clean the air without making too much noise. An ionic breeze machine is one of the newer technologies to enter the market in the past few years - the ionizer is a clever component of this type of home air filter that makes it work so well. Without an ionizer, the ionic breeze device wouldn't be able to function as efficiently.

In general, air purifiers for homes come in many different forms, so you have to choose the one that's right for you, whether it be an ionic air purifier, or a HEPA filter device. HEPA filters are an advanced technology that claims to be able to remove up to 99.97% of the dust, pollen, mold, and bacteria within 0.3 microns. These filters compare quite well to ionic breeze purifiers. Ionic breeze purifiers are air purifiers for homes that many people choose over HEPA filters for the noise factor. Plus, an ionic air purifier is highly effective in small spaces.

The weather today

October 29th, 2009 by alanwashington1990

VOLMET stations broadcast weather reports to aircrafts in flight. The name is a combination of two French words, vol, meaning “aircraft,” and météo, meaning “weather.”

Three VOLMET stations that serve aircraft on trans-Atlantic routes are located in New York City, Gander, Newfoundland, and Shannon, Ireland.

These VOLMET stations serve planes out of the range of weather radar. They broadcast in amplitude modulation upper-sideband mode. AM is sent via a carrier wave with a wave, or band, on each side that contains the content. Music needs both sidebands to be heard clearly. Voice needs only one. The sideband mode thus saves bandwidth. Marconi used it to send code across the Atlantic. In a digital age, this relic of the analog era survives.

The New York City VOLMET station is WSY70. I hear it on 3.485 megahertz in the 90 meter short wave band. Its transmitter site is on the Atlantic Ocean, near Barnegat Light, New Jersey, about 90 miles south of New York City. Its control point is in New York, and its ID is “this is New York radio.”

On the website of radio amateur W8JYZ are two PDF files that tell the story of New York aviation weather radio and station WSY70.

WSY70 shares its frequency with VFG, the VOLMET station serving the international airport at Gander, Newfoundland. It's among the least-known broadcasting stations that legally ID as New York, one of the more useful, and one of the most intriguing.

It broadcasts the wind speed and direction, cloud cover, visibility, temp and dew point, and precipitation, for airports in the eastern third of the United States. That's everything pilots need, and all anyone needs to visualize the conditions in a particular location. It gives the time every five minutes. There's no need to keep looking at the clock, as long as one can convert Zulu (GMT) to local time. There's also no need to get up and change the station when a bad song comes on, or when a talk show host's topic becomes the contents of Sarah Palin's closet.

WSY70 broadcasts for the first twenty minutes of each hour and signs off. VFG Gander VOLMET takes over from :20 to :30 after and broadcasts the same info for airports in Canada. WSY70 returns for another twenty minutes, and VFG for the last ten.

Each station has a range of several hundred miles, using the old reliable AM upper-sideband mode. Trans-Atlantic pilots leaving the eastern US can start with New York, switch to Gander, and stay with it over the Atlantic until Shannon can be heard.

On my trips to Paris, when there was nothing to do but look out the window at Iceland, I would think about what I might hear if my home listening post was with me.

All three VOLMET stations would be listenable, and a place no doubt exists, in the middle of the Atlantic, where Gander and Shannon can both be heard loud and clear.

It's also fun to tune away from the Big Talkers and Fresh Music Mixes to 3.485 for some VOLMET. The later the hour, the better. I can find out what the next day's weather might be at my location, and imagine what might be going on in the cockpit of a plane headed for Paris, or the darkened WSY70 control room. It sparks the imagination, the way radio used to.
